Coming Up

Caring Committee -  Wednesday, February 1, 6:30 pm at CBS - all are welcome

Movie Night is Back! - Wednesday, February 1, 7:00 pm at CBS.

Gloria Gross saw this at a UU church in Texas and said that we must all see this. The World According to Monsanto. If you did not read about UU Rev. Nate Walker and Monsanto here is your second chance!

Sunday Service - February 5, 11 am.

"Service Is A Blessings" presented by Jeanine Kleimo, Chair of the Dover Interfaith Mission for Housing and the 2010 Dover Post Great Person of the Year! Inspirational talk about "the inner light that we all have and how we must let it shine".

The UUCD Philosophy Club - February 6 and February 20, 7:00 to 8:30 pm.

We’re back, and taking a new tack. There is a scrap of ancient Greek poetry from Archilochus that goes:

The fox knows many things, but the hedgehog knows one big thing.

This one line has been the focus of countless dissertations, discussions, dialogues and debates. It all started with one chapter in Isaiah Berlin’s 1949 classic, The Proper Study of Mankind (sic) and is the focus of Ronald Dworkin’s new work, Justice for Hedgehogs. Dworkin starts by offering his own interpretation of the quote, and then goes on to apply it beautifully in his book which is divided into five parts: Independence, Interpretation, Ethics, Morality and Politics.

So I am proposing we use Dworkin’s book to try to figure out what it is that the hedgehog knows, and how it applies in these five categories. I would ask those who attend to read the Introduction and Part I for Monday, February 6. We can then talk about the ideas/arguments we like, don’t like, don’t get, agree with, disagree with, etc.

We still meet twice a month, 1st and 3rd Monday evenings 7:00 to 8:30 pm.  The Club, of course, is open to everyone with an inquiring mind. All ages welcome. No cost. There is some preparation this time so we can all be ‘on the same page.’ Each evening is self-contained so it’s ok if you can’t make every gathering.

I look forward to some spirited dialogue. – Contact Greg at minister@uucd.org for more information and locations.

Social Justice Committee - Wednesday, February 8 at 7 pm at CBS. Please come to a meeting to see how you can get involved. Support our new chair, Mark Jarrell. He has an Adopt-A-Highway Initiative* that he would like to see get started. Plus finalizing our plans for the next dinner we prepare at Dover Men’s Interfaith Shelter (DIMH) on February 13.

Rev. Greg Chute has graciously volunteered to be the point person for our monthly dinner at DIMH. Email him at minister@uucd.org to volunteer!

Spiritual Autobiography Workshop - Saturday, February 18, 9:00 am – 2:00 pm

Using a variety of group and individual processes, this workshop is designed to help us each reflect on our own unique spiritual journey, to uncover and to recover some of the formative moments and experiences which have influenced our perceptions and priorities, to look again at transitional and transformative experiences which have shaped our character, to assess and to reassess some of the meanings we constructed and to explore how where we have been continues to effect who we are today.

I have presented this workshop several times now. In every case people are surprised that some of the less well remembered events and encounters have a much more critical effect when examined in a much more purposeful way; and that the formative moments are not always the ones we think of first. Creating a new context in which to view our journeys can raise new consciousness and clarity.

The workshop is scheduled for Saturday, February 18, 9 am to 2pm. The location is still to be determined. There is an $8 per person fee for lunch and materials. Everyone interested in the difficult but rewarding work of self-exploration is invited. Please contact me at pastoruucd@gmail.com for more information and to register. I look forward to an interesting and rewarding journey. - Greg

For Your Information (FYI)

January FUUN Event - We had over 20 celebrate the Chinese New Year at a ChinaTown Buffet. Matt Hesseltine was the overall winner of the word games. Bob Ellingsworth-2nd and Jeanne Schafenburg third. The BIG surprise was Emily Lettieri was giving everyone a run for the money at age FIVE! Oh by the way there was Chinese money and candy given out! Aren’t you sorry you missed out on the fun? Mark your calendar for the fourth Wednesday of each month.

UUSC Guest-At-Your-Table Boxes - Place your Guest at Your Table box where you share your meals and keep it there for several weeks. When enjoying meals with family and friends, read a story from Stories of Hope. These stories will connect you to real people who are involved in the daily struggle for human rights. Telling the stories of their hopes and dreams is a meaningful way to bring these special guests into your home. We will collect the boxes on Social Justice Sunday, March 11. Direct questions to contact@uucd.org.

Project HUG - A project focused on providing warmth, comfort, smiles, and hugs for children and young adults in Delaware who are homeless or in foster care.

We are seeking donations of "practical, portable, positive hugs" such as….

NEW Blankets, Coats, Scarves, Mittens/Gloves, Ear Muffs, Snuggies, Pillow Pets, Sleeping Bags, Cozy Pajamas, Warm Slippers, Cuddle Duds or Long Underwear, Hand Warmers, Snuggly Socks, Sweatshirts, Hoodies, Fleece Pants, Sweaters and other toasty, cozy items that will make their recipient feel warm and appreciated.

Hand made items are also terrific and greatly appreciated. Our only request is that they be new and never used.

We are NOT seeking donations of electronic items, candles or food.

(GACEC State Federal Tax ID for tax deductable donations 7701010000).

Our UUCD children will learn about this project in their religious education classes. Our final day for collection will be Sunday, February 12. We will then give it to the state to disburse the items.

What’s Cookin’ with the FUUN Committee?  We would like to get a good cross-section of recipes from everyone for our e-news "Recipe of the Week". All types of foods. It would be extra special if you added any personal side notes about the recipe like this is a family tradition or something your child invented etc. If you just tweaked another recipe from a cookbook that is okay, as long as there is some personal touches from you. We (FUUN) know that there are a lot of great cooks so please send them to news@uucd.org.

The Dover Interfaith Men’s Shelter (DIMH) - Molly Keogh is our hard working UUCD representative on the DIMH Board and also donates time weekly to the shelter. Thank you Molly, you make the rest of us look good.

UUCD has been active in helping the shelter since prior to UUCD and DIMH being official!)- If you have spare dishes or pots and pans they would love to have them so that they can set up housing for men who find jobs. They also need people who are able to cook in their kitchen, consider volunteering for a night- food can be provided. Please if you have recipes for large scale cooking please send to news@uucd.org so we can have a file ready for when we start our once a month cooking.

A professional filmmaker made this very short film on the shelter. Go to the website at http://doverinterfaithmission.org and click on VIDEO on the left.

Want to schedule events or rooms?  Email uucdschedule@uucd.org  CBS is available all day on Wednesdays and Sundays for bookings.

Please Volunteer One Week a month.  We are looking for four people each week to do the usher/greeting and the coffee hour.  Each team would sign up for one week each month for a year commitment. We need YOU on one of the weekly teams.

The Board of Trustees signed up to do the fourth week of each month.  That still leaves most every week of the month without hospitality hour- no food or drink. This is a time-honored UU tradition. Please sign up to do one week each month for the year. We would love for U to help. Please email contact@uucd.org if you are not able to come to church on Sunday to sign up!

Joys, Concerns, Sorrows.  Do you have a community joy, concern or sorrow that you would like posted in the weekly newsletter? Email news@uucd.org.  Also the card that you fill for community prayer/meditation on Sundays will be posted on e-news the following week. If you want your name attached, please write it on the card. Postings will only be accepted by the person involved or person with permission to give out the information.

Facebook.  We need the congregation's help to make the best UU Facebook on the planet!  We need our members to "like" the UUCD Facebook We need photos that anyone may have from UUCD services or events with descriptions, making sure that people in the photo agree to this.  Help us help our church grow! Send your pictures to news@uucd.org

Social Justice Sundays.  The 2nd Sunday of the month is Social Justice Sunday at UUCD.  We are donating the collection plate (not including pledges) once a month on Social Justice Sunday to a local or UU charity.

Want to join the Joy of Children's Religious Education?  We’d love to have your time and talent in growing an awesome children/youth community. In order to follow our guidelines for Safe Congregations we need three teacher assistants for every Sunday. The Teacher assistant does not need to help in the class planning/teaching just enjoy being with the children in the class. Have questions? Please contact Cathy Marsh at marshcatherine@yahoo.com or sign-up at the Information Table.  As always, we are just so grateful for your support of our RE program!

UUCD Visited UUSD. The UU’s of Southern DE were very happy to welcome members from UUCD to their July 18, 2010 service. This is one of the two photos of UUCD members they had in their August newsletter.
